FOR a perfect pie, the meat must be lean and tender, says a local bakery vendor.
Paul and Rachael Clancy, of Clancy's Bakehouse, in Waverley Rd, Malvern East, have won two bronze medals in this year's Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition.
The bakery won over the taste buds of judges with its chicken-and-vegetable and chunky beef pies.
Paul Clancy, pictured, said pie-making was an "art".
"The pastry must look and feel exactly right," he said.
"The gravy must be rich and the whole pie must look and smell fantastic - and, of course, taste great."

Malvern East was our first stop, and it was here that I discovered the best quiche I have ever tasted. The bakers at Clancy’s Bakehouse (278 Waverley Rd, Malvern East) know the secret to a truly perfect quiche. The filling is creamy yet dense and really captures the essence of the flavourings.
I looooove the caramelised onion and goats cheese quiche, though I was pregnant while we stayed here and really wasn’t supposed to be eating goats cheese. The traditional Lorraine also deserves an honorable mention.
Now any time I am in that neck of the woods I am compelled to stop in at Clancy’s and pick up a quiche for dinner.
